Introduction
Like comics, I view the use of movie and/or animation as a useful tool of instruction because it has the ability to increase the learning opportunities for my students in classroom. According to Maria Peagler (2014), "our brains process images 60,000 times faster than text," so the use of video makes a relevant as well as useful resource for instruction in the classroom and beyond.
When examining my usage of movies and animations, I have been privileges to use them in two ways. First, I commonly use movies and animations as a learning tool in classroom and/or when working with teachers for professional development. I use them as an introduction to the lesson or topic, as well as a method to reteach. Often, I have embedded them in the learning management system and/or saved presentation that is used as a blended format. Second, my students have used movie and/or animation as tool to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of topic. This usually comes in the format of a project or performance based assessment. My students use flip cameras, PowToons, and iMovie when working on these type of tasks. The question, teachers commonly ask me is “how do you get your students to use the different formats?” Well, because I commonly use this as a mode of teaching, students are exposed to the format. My use of these digital tools evoke student curiosity and interest. Sometimes during the lesson, students will watch as modify or start PowToon. This moment of front loading is used to teach the digital tool while teaching the content. Students then explore and share their learning with others. I simple go back to students who require my immediate attention. Allowing the students to see me sometimes struggle to use the digital tools remove the barriers of hesitation and/or frustration because they begin to learn that “we all are learners in this process.”
Conclusion
To apply the concept of visual storytelling, that my students have an opportunity to do in the classroom, I would like to share the sub-pages of Project 3. Project 3 involves the use of multiple images related to the Media Center that was put together in a moving picture format. This video is a short public announcement/advertisement for my school Media Center. This project serves as another example of what students could do to demonstrate their learning. The purpose of the video is to generate more interest in visiting the Media Center, so the pictures selected for this project tells that story. This project reinforce the concept and use of educational videos and why it's becoming an increasingly dominant tool in today's classroom. Therefore the likelihood of our children utilizing video as learning tool is a worth while goal for educators. Exposing students to multiple opportunities to engage with video making platforms will increase the instructional rigor and student self reflection.
