Curricular Concepts
For this workshop, the curricular concepts that will be addressed vary from writing, communications, inferencing, content specific concepts, and various literacies areas. The use comics or graphic novels supports student use of the writing workshop components. Requiring students to add dialogue to their digital photography encourages students to craft a graphic novel or comic that results in a significantly deeper understanding of content. Due to the fact that students have to combine images and text will increase their understanding of the nuances of writing techniques. Requiring student to organize their story/ideas by using story maps will ensure students are making complex decision about managing their ideas. In addition, the genre also helps students learn how to make and create inferences between text and image, an incredibly important skill to the task of critical thinking.
